Old mate Fechy

September 2, 2019

So after surviving the last 50 klms in the dark without a deer trying to kill me I pull up on the front lawn of Fechy’s house.  Fechy and Lesley come out to greet me and there is hugs all round – I think they were as relieved as I was to have made it safely.

Because of the different time zone I lost an hour again and therefore my arrival time was actually 9:30 pm.  By the time I get to bed its after midnight.

Next morning I feel like a zombie but get up around 7:30 am.  I get a tour around the house and it feels like I am staying at a beach side holiday home.  The house was built in 1880 but what is really interesting is that it was built on the east side of the harbor and then boated across to the west side on a barge.  The house was then drawn by a bullock train to its present location;

To celebrate my arrival Fechy had put the flags out;

To test my MacGyver skills Fechy took me out to his well where he had dropped a board down into it and wanted to get it out.  It took me a while but I came up with using a rope to lasso to hook it and drag it out.  I am sure he only got me to do it given I was half asleep.

I then get a tour of the wharf where the local Lobster fisherman have their million dollar boats moored;

Fechy also has his luxury yacht tied up there;

We get back home and Fechy notices something about Stan’s rear tyre that nearly makes him fall over;

I am shocked as well as I had been keeping an eye on them (always going to change them when I got to Fechy’s) but obviously the big day’s ride finished it off.  Had I known how bad it was I would have pulled up and got it changed – Fechy just thinks that it is perfect tyre management in getting 100% out of it.  If your wondering the front is not much better.

I have a nap which ends up lasting nearly a coupe of hours.  Lesley has booked a nice restaurant in a great location for dinner as its right on the water front;

It is the ‘Ye Olde Argyler’ which is both a restaurant and lodge where you can stay upstairs – only 15 klms from Fechy’s house.  We sit on the balcony and have a drink whilst the sun goes down – hard life over here!

I have crumbed Haddock and potato mash – superb meal and good fun evening.  We make our way back home for a cup of tea and cake (that Lesley had baked).

Next morning I do my washing which included all of my motorcycle gear.  Its beautiful weather so I get taken on a tour of the area.  Our first stop is Sandhill Beach;

Next up is Shelburne which is a historical British Loyalist Colony.  Fechy gets us there in interesting fashion which included a few u-turns and seeing the same stretch of road several times! ha.  We have a walk around the town to check out its history;

Our last stop for the afternoon is at the local Arcadian Historical Village where we go for a 20 min trail walk around the site;

Back home Lesley cooks us ribs for dinner and we then chill out watching Netflix for the rest of the night.

After breakfast the next morning Fechy and I head down to the local Yamaha dealership to sort out a service for Stan.  I have a bit of trouble with the tyres but eventually we find a set that can be ordered and arrive in time.  I book Stan in for later in the week.

We then go to Vernon D’Eon Fishing Supplies as Fechy wanted to cash is $25 gift voucher (won at a recent golf day) on a new Helly Hansen jacket while there was a 50% sale on.  We go in and the sales lady is an avid motorcycle enthusiast and is far more interested in talking about motorbikes/riding then selling jackets!  In the end Fechy got his jacket and I bought the same brand puff jacket.  I also bought a great pair of insulated waterproof gloves – totally set for the inclement weather now!  If only I had the gear a couple of weeks ago.  We then go around to the hardware store and supermarket before heading home for lunch.

After lunch Fechy takes me out sailing on his wayfarer – it may be only a small boat but we had a gigantic amount of fun;

We had a great treat when a seal decided to pop his head out of the water and check us out;

We spend a couple of hours sailing around the bay before packing up and heading home for dinner.

The next morning Fechy takes me next door to meet a Lobster fishing family.  The father is in his early 80’s and has handed the business over to his 2 sons – they are all in the shed fixing their 400 cray pots in preparation for the season;

After catching up with the guys we head off to Yarmouth which is a larger coastal town about 50 klms west.  On arrival we stop for lunch at Subway and I get a Lobster roll (unique to the area).

We then go and have a walk around the historic part of town where the ‘Captain’s Houses’ are located;

Next stop is the old lighthouse and the walking trail;

We have a coffee back in the town and then head home.  I cook dinner for the guys to give them a spell.

Over the next couple of days we just hang out.  I get Stan sorted and have a set of tyres fitted and his 20k service completed.  We do get a huge storm that has come up from the South that dumps over 120 mm in 12 hours.

Our next adventure is to head up to Lake Patrice which is 80 klms away and where the guys have a cabin.  Its a fantastic location and we have a lot of fun;

Next morning the lake is like glass and Fechy heads out for a paddle in his kayak.  I have another crack at fishing and manage to hook a monster Pickerel (pest like carp) but lost it when I tried to drag it up on land – thankfully I had Lesley as a witness otherwise no-one would have believed me!

We pack up and head to Digby for the Wharf Rat Motorcycle Rally (largest of its kind in Canada).  We only get 10 mins up the road when I realise that I have left my watch and torch behind – back we go.  Doh!

Its a beautiful day in Digby and the streets are packed with bikes;

I found this old girl which I would have to say was my pick of the bunch;

We stay for a few hours and then head back to Yarmouth for a late lunch and then home.

My final day with the Fechners is low key as I spend most of it packing and sorting my gear out.  I have really enjoyed staying with these guys and it has been great to see some familiar faces from home after being away for over 3 months – for them to have me for 10 days was a huge effort on their part!  Not only did they feed and entertain me but Lesley also stitched up my boots and luggage strap.  I look forward to coming back with Helen next time.

Next up is heading back down to the US and spending a few days in Boston.

      Is that because they re-cut more tread?
